CONTEXT In Romania, nearly 20,000 underage girls become pregnant every year, representing 45% of all teen pregnancies in Europe. These young mothers often face severe social stigma, lack of institutional support, and increased vulnerability to poverty and exploitation. Authorities largely ignore the issue, leaving them without guidance or assistance, trapped in a cycle where their children are likely to face the same fate. CHALLENGE The challenge was to break this cycle and give the underage girls a voice, not a stigma. APPROACH We aimed to bridge the gap between teenage mothers and partner organisations that could support them, by providing teenage mothers with medical, psychological, and financial aid, ensuring they raise their children informed, empowered, and protected from societal exclusion. In the long term, the goal is to break the cycle by changing behavioural patterns through awareness and education. |
